If you’ve always wanted to write for teens, here is a great contest to get you started.
MIDDLE-GRADE ADVENTURE
br /> Entry period is August 1 to October 31, 2007. Winners are announced in the March, 2008 issue of Children’s Writer. Prize structure is $500 for first place plus publication in Children’s Writer, $250 for 2nd place, and $100 for 3rd, 4th, and 5th places.
The contest is for a story about an adventure, small or large, to 1,200 words, for ages 8 to 12. The adventure may take place in another genre, such as historical fiction, or fantasy, or may be contemporary. The antagonist or conflict may stem from other characters, from internal goals, from nature, society, or technology, but the story should balance plot and characterization. Stories will also be judged on age-targeting, originality, style, and the overall quality of writing. Publishability is the ultimate criterion.

Writing a spec TV script takes time … so I’m giving you plenty of advanced notice about the Nickelodeon Writing competition. This is a great opportunity for aspiring scriptwriters. If you are chosen for a fellowship you will learn with the best in the industry and get first hand experience working in a highly creative environment.
This is one of the few scriptwriting contests I’ve seen that has NO Entry Fee. As in FREE!
Winners will get Salaried Writing Fellowships in live action and animation television.
Nickelodeon is offering writing fellowships in live action and animated television to culturally and ethnically diverse, new writers. Participants will have hands-on experience writing spec scripts and pitching story ideas.
The program, developed to broaden Nickelodeon’s outreach efforts, provides a salaried position for up to one year.
The next submission period runs from January 2 – February 28, 2008.

The deadline is fast approaching for one of Canada’s best writing contests. There are loads of prizes and lots of great exposure for the winners.
This year there are three categories: short story, poetry, and creative nonfiction.
The CBC Literary Awards competition is the only literary competition that celebrates original, unpublished works, in Canada’s two official languages. There are three categories: short story, poetry, and creative nonfiction, and $60,000 of prize money courtesy of the Canada Council for the Arts. In addition, winning entries are published in Air Canada’s enRoute magazine and visibility is offered to the winners and their winning entries by CBC.
Creative nonfiction includes humour writing, memoir, biography, essay (including personal essay), travel writing and feature articles.

Be Mighty Contest
Here’s a great contest endorsed by Shaquille O’Neal and just for kids age 7 to 15. Wonderful prizes.
The Prizes:
The first 500 entrants will receive a Mighty Milk backpack with Shaquille O’Neal’s signature.
