This is a writing contest for those of you interested in writing FOR children.
Many writing contests these days have an entry fee … so one of the reasons I am featuring this contest is that it is FREE TO ENTER … so if you are just getting your feet wet and want to see if your story is a winner, now is the time to find out!
CRITERIA: Stories may be any length up to 800 words. Stories for beginning readers should not exceed 500 words. Indicate the word count in the upper right-hand corner of the first page of your manuscript. Theme: Mystery stories
No crime, violence, or derogatory humor.
PRIZES: Three prizes of $1,000 each. The three winning entries will be announced in June 2007. These stories will become the property of Highlights for Children and will be published by Highlights. All other submissions will be considered for purchase by Highlights.
Deadline: February 28, 2007

We are looking for nonfiction articles for teens, ages 13 to 17, based on a personal experience, to 1,200 words. The article may be told in the first or third person, or take the form of an interview, but should be the experience of a teen, for a teen. The subject may be a serious issue (family, school, or community issue) or it may be light (entertainment, fashion, friends, or fun). The subject and approach may be spiritual or inspirational, but may not be denominational or dogmatic. Publishability is the ultimate criterion.
Prize structure is $250 for first place plus publication in Children’s Writer, $100 for 2nd place, and $50 for 3rd and 4th places.

The Kathyrn A. Morton Prize in Poetry includes a $2,000 cash award, publication of a full-length collection of poetry, and a standard royalty contract.
Contest is open to any writer of English who is a citizen of the United States. Individual poems from the manuscript may have been published previously in magazines, chapbooks of less than 48 pages, or anthologies, but the collection as a whole must be unpublished.

This is a really neat concept … love it because it is both challenging and creative.
You have from Midnight (Central Standard Time) March 31, 2007 to Midnight (CST) April 2, 2007 (48 hours) to write the best darn poem you can, using all 10 words provided by CV2 (and a few of your own of course!).
Pre-registration and an email address are required.
At 12:00 midnight (CST), when Friday becomes Saturday, CV2’s list of words will be emailed to registered participants. Participants have 2 days (48 hours) to write the poem and must use each word at least once in their final submitted poem. Submitted poems may not exceed 48 lines. Only one poem may be entered per participant.
Deadline for pre-registration is Friday, March 23rd, 2007. The $10.00 registration fee can be paid by PayPal or by cheque/money order sent to the CV2 office.
